A New York City orchestra dedicated to creating performance opportunities for professional and amateur musicians, exploring familiar and little-known works in the orchestral repertoire, and presenting concerts in the community
To commemorate the 250th anniversary of the founding of our nation, the Centre Symphony Orchestra of New York is proud to present the modern premiere of George W. Chadwick’s Symphony in C, Op. 5. Completed in the winter of 1881 and premiered in Boston in the Spring of 1882, Chadwick’s first Symphony was never published in his lifetime and will receive its modern premiere in a newly engraved performance edition created by Orchestra Librarian and Centre Symphony hornist Marc Cerri.
George Whitefield Chadwick (November 13, 1854 - April 4, 1931) was part of the “Second New England School” of American composers active in the late 19th century. Steeped in the romantic traditions of European symphonic music, Chadwick was one of the first American composers to successfully create concert music with a distinctly New World flavor. His works included several operas, three symphonies, five string quartets, tone poems, incidental music, and various songs and choral works.
